Action Alert: Restore Emergency Medical Assistance to Sick Immigrants

CALL TO ACTION: THE LIVES OF MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY IN PERIL!

Last year during the budget debacle, sweeping cuts were introduced, often during the dead of night and with little oversight.  One of those changes was to a program call Emergency Medical Assistance.  This program was integral in covering people who could not afford private insurance, and who did not qualify for General Medical Assistance, Minnesota Care, etc.  This include patients who have been victims of kidney failure, cancer, crippling accidents, drug addiction, and other debilitating diseases.  People have already died, and more are dying.  Right now the House and Senate are considering bills that would restore a small amount of this lost coverage but still leaves critical cracks in the health care system through which people are going to fall and die.

The Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action committee strongly denounces the attacks on those least able to defend themselves, the sick and elderly.  We ask you to join us in calling your local state Senator and House Representative, and asking them to pressure the members of the Health and Human Services Finance Committee to restore all lost Emergency Medical Assistance.  Especially important to ask your representatives to pressure are Jim Abeler (House) and David Hann (Senate), who are the chairs of the committee for their respective legislative bodies.  We need to ask for all the cuts to be rolled back, especially for people who suffer from life threatening illnesses such as cancer, kidney failure, and accidents requiring life support.

LLAMADA A TOMAR ACCION: LAS VIDAS DE MIEMBROS DE NUESTRA COMUNIDAD ESTAN EN PELIGRO!

El año pasado durante el fracaso en la legislatura sobre el presupuesto estatal, la legislatura hizo recortes presupuestarios grandes, muchos de los recortes hicieron en la madrugada y sin debate. Uno de estos recortes fue al programa de Asistencia Médica de Emergencia. Este programa fue clave para ayudar la gente que no tiene el dinero para pagar por seguranza médica privada y que no califican para otros programas como Minnesota Care, Asistencia Médica General, etc. Eso incluye personas que están muriendo de problemas serios de riñones, cáncer, accidentes que dejan personas en condiciones graves, adicciones a drogas, y otras enfermedades debilitantes. Ya han muerto personas, y más podrían morir. Ahora el Senado y la Casa de Representantes de Minnesota están discutiendo propuestas de ley que podrían restaurar un poco de lo que cortaron en la sesión pasada pero todavía deja muchas personas sin cobertura médica que podría resultar en mas muertos.

El Comité por los Derechos de los Inmigrantes (MIRAc) denuncia estos ataques contra las personas con ninguna habilidad de defenderse – los ancianos y personas con enfermedades graves. Te pedimos hacer una llamada a tu representante y senador para pedirle que presionen los miembros  del Comité de Finanzas de Salud y Servicios Humanos para que restauren toda la asistencia médica de emergencia que recortaron en la sesión pasada. Las personas más importantes son Jim Abeler (representante) y David Hann (senador) quienes son los encargados de los comités. Debemos pedir que deshagan todos los recortes, especialmente los recortes que afectan a personas con enfermedades graves como cáncer, enfermedades de los riñones, accidentes serios, etc.
