ImageSheriff Stanek: No More Deportations!

  • Stop using Hennepin County jail as a deportation machine!
    • Stop cooperating with “Secure Communities”
    • Stop honoring ICE detainer requests

There have been over a million deportations in this U.S. in the last 4 years. Most of them now happen in county jails, through programs like “Secure Communities.” Too many of our families have been torn apart. We say enough is enough — no more deportations! We call on Sheriff Stanek to stop using the county jail as a deportation machine. Specifically we call on him to stop honoring ICE detainer requests. If he is unwilling to do so, we call on the Hennepin County Commissioners to override him since they’re in charge of policy for the county jail.

Take Action!

« CONTACT SHERIFF STANEK at (612) 348-3744 or email
sheriff@co.hennepin.mn.us to tell him no more deportations — stop honoring ICE detainer requests in the county jail!

« CALL YOUR COUNTY COMMISSIONER (612-348-3081 to find out who yours is) and tell them to stop letting Sheriff Stanek use the county jail as a deportation machine — stop honoring ICE detainer requests in the county jail!

Call-in / email / tweet Sen. Franken & Rep. Ellison:
Stand up for genuine, progressive immigration reform!

Call them!

Senator Franken – (651) 221-1016

Email them!
Send Rep. Ellison a message: http://forms.house.gov/ellison/webforms/issue_subscribe.htm
Send Senator Franken a message: http://www.franken.senate.gov/?p=email_al

Tweet this message:
I want progressive immigration reform-legalization for all, no 2nd class ‘guest worker’, no border militarization! @KeithEllison @AlFranken

I want you to push for genuine, progressive immigration reform that consists of:

  1. Legalization for *all* — we don’t want a restrictive or punitive approach
  1. No second-class guest worker programs — full legalization with full equality for immigrant workers
  1. No more militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border — the border is already too militarized leading to too many deaths.
  1. No increased workplace repression — everyone should have the right to work with dignity and labor rights. Programs like E-Verify should be abolished, not expanded.

Context / Background:
Congressional Democrats and the White House have announced that they plan to push a national comprehensive immigration reform bill in the new congressional session that starts this month. On issue after issue, we’ve seen the White House and Congressional Democrats too quick to abandon progressive proposals and give in to conservative bullying. So ideas that start out progressive (like health care reform for example) go through a legislative process that tears out any progressive content and stuffs it full of pro-corporate and repressive ideas. The final product comes out on the other end as at best mediocre or at worst as regressive, counterproductive laws.  We don’t want this to happen to immigration reform. We want genuine, progressive immigration reform.

So we are asking Minnesotans to start contacting Senator Franken and Rep. Ellison on Wednesday, January 16. Tell them you want them to take leadership to stand up for genuine, progressive immigration reform, and you want them to say no to pro-corporate or repressive proposals that some politicians will try to make part of immigration reform.

Rep. Ellison and Senator Franken are seen as progressive congresspeople. Here’s a chance for them to stand up for progressive values and push back against conservative, repressive proposals. Let them know that compromise with anti-immigrant ideas is not acceptable. No human being is illegal and all people have dignity and equal rights. We expect them to fight for and push through a genuine, progressive immigrant reform that provides legalization for all, that doesn’t create vast pro-corporate second class guest worker programs, and that doesn’t further militarize the U.S.-Mexico border or expand repressive workplace measures like E-Verify.  We expect no less from them.

After you’ve contacted them, email us at MIRAcMN@gmail.com and let us know how it went and if you get a response. Thanks!
